The Farm to School institute is a 13 year old program that supports schools, early education programs and groups and assists them in maintaining a successful and wholesome education program. From this collaboration comes an endless amount of opportunities for today's youth. FTS institute works in partnership with several groups, such as Vermont FEED, SNAP, Shelburne Farms, Vermont Garden Network, NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association) and more. We worked closely with Andrew D. (Vital Communities) and Kayla S. (Vermont FEED) and they will continue to be our coaches and guides for the next year.

In June, Jennifer Hutchinson (Manager of Food Programs), Alyssa Pratt (Student Support Specialist, SEA), Lea Buel (School Nutrition Specialist, SEA), Brandi Cummings (Home to School Coordinator, BT) and Jason Derner (Alternative Programs Administrator, SEA) had the amazing opportunity to attend an informal training on behalf of the district. This group spent three days at Shelburne Farms learning about the Farm to School process, and so much more. They were able to establish a value statement and discover so many exciting opportunities to bring to not only the SEA program, but the entire district!

The Barre Unified Union School District is committed to Farm to School programming that supports student growth in a holistic approach with the goal of empowering students to become stewards of the BUUSD community and beyond. Through this commitment we will promote safety, empathy, and inclusivity that will promote student growth and engagement. We believe through this we will increase access to food security, health and wellness education while celebrating our local food system.
